01 · Overview

Town first, then the beach

Most people fly into Zanzibar and go straight to the sand. This trip gives the island’s history and its interior one full day each first, so the beach days that follow feel earned rather than empty.

You land at Zanzibar airport and are in Stone Town within twenty minutes, in time for a walk through the old city as the light turns gold. The next morning you cross the island to Jozani forest and a spice farm, then drive north to Nungwi, where the reef sits close and the sea is deep enough to swim at all tides. Days three and four are yours, with a dhow sunset cruise on the last evening and a short transfer back to the airport on day five.

Arrival · Dinner

Karibu to Stone Town

Your driver meets you in arrivals and takes you the short way into Stone Town, to a hotel in one of the old merchant houses. There is time to drop your bags, change into something that covers shoulders and knees, and have a cold drink.

In the late afternoon a local guide walks you through the old fort, the spice market and the alleys of carved doors, then up to a rooftop for sunset over the harbour. Dinner is at Forodhani night market on the seafront: Zanzibar pizza, grilled fish and sugar-cane juice.

Red colobus, cloves and the road north

After breakfast you drive south-east to Jozani forest, where red colobus monkeys feed in the trees beside the path and a boardwalk runs out through the mangroves. The monkeys are found only on Zanzibar, and they are used to quiet visitors.

Lunch is at a spice farm in the centre of the island, after a walk among cloves, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg picked straight from the plant. In the afternoon you drive to Nungwi at the northern tip, arriving at the beach in time for sunset.

Free beach day · B D

A day with nothing on it

The north tip is the one part of Zanzibar where the tide does not decide your day: the water stays deep enough to swim from morning to evening. Walk the beach to the dhow builders at the village end, read under a palm, or do nothing at all.

If you would like to see the reef, the boats to Mnemba atoll leave in the morning and are back by lunch, with two snorkelling stops for turtles and reef fish. We book it for you on request.

Free day · dhow cruise · B D

A slow day and a sail at sunset

Another free day on the north coast. It is a good morning for a walk to the lighthouse at the point, or a second swim before the midday heat.

At about five you board a wooden dhow on the beach, with a crew of three and drinks in the cool box. The lateen sail goes up, you sail out past the reef, and the sun goes down over the water before you are back on the sand at dusk.

Before you go

The practical part

Questions

Yes. The north tip is the one part of Zanzibar where the tide does not empty the beach, which is why we base the beach days there. The east coast has much bigger tides.

In the main streets, yes. Your guide walks you back after Forodhani on day 1; later on, take a taxi and keep valuables out of sight.

Yes, that is how most people do it. Flights from Arusha and the Serengeti airstrips take about an hour, and we arrange the connection.

No, it is an optional half-day trip on day 3 or 4. We book it for you and add it to your price.

The long rains bring heavy showers most days and some beach hotels close for a few weeks. The trip still runs, and we book a hotel in Nungwi that stays open.
