01 · Overview

The route, and why it runs this way

These are day trips, not a tour: each morning your guide collects you from your hotel, and each afternoon you are back in time for a shower and dinner in town. They fit neatly before a Kilimanjaro climb, after a safari, or between flights.

Both villages sit on the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro above Moshi, among banana groves and small coffee farms. Day one goes to Materuni, a short drive from Moshi, for a walk to its waterfall and a morning with a family who grow, roast and brew their own coffee. Day two goes east to Marangu, the old Chagga heartland near the start of the Marangu climbing route, for the caves the Chagga once hid in, a taste of banana beer and lunch in a village home. Staying in Arusha instead? The same days work from there, with a longer drive each way.

Materuni: the waterfall and the coffee

Your guide collects you after breakfast and drives up through the farms to Materuni. With a village guide you walk through banana and coffee gardens, then about 45 minutes down to a waterfall of some 70 metres, cold enough to wake you up if you swim.

Back in the village, a Chagga family shows you the whole process: picking, pulping, roasting over a fire and grinding by hand. You drink the result, then sit down to a Chagga lunch before the drive back to Moshi by about three.

Marangu: caves, banana beer and village life

Today you drive east to Marangu, near the gate of the Marangu climbing route. A local guide walks you through the village and down into the underground tunnels the Chagga dug as hiding places during old wars and raids, with narrow passages and small rooms carved from the earth.

On the way back up you stop to taste banana beer, brewed in the village, and to see how the Chagga farm bananas, coffee and vegetables together on the same small plot. Lunch is in a village home, and you are back in Moshi by mid-afternoon.
